The best brain dump app is your own voice.
A brain dump only works if it's fast enough to outrun your filter. Typing isn't. Talk for two minutes — messy, unordered, half-sentences welcome — and Outloud hands back a clean, titled note with every to-do you mentioned pulled out as a checklist.
What a brain dump actually is
A brain dump is emptying your head into one place — every task, worry, idea and loose end, unfiltered. It works because your brain is a terrible storage system and an excellent thinking system: once it trusts that things are captured somewhere, it stops re-reminding you at 2 a.m. The rule is that capture and organization are separate steps. Dump first. Sort later. Never both at once.
Why saying it beats writing it
Speaking is about three times faster than typing, and it doesn't interrupt the thought you're having. That's the whole game for a brain dump — the moment you slow down to punctuate, your filter catches up and the honest stuff stops coming. The old tradeoff was that audio ends up unsearchable. That tradeoff is gone: Outloud transcribes the recording, titles it, writes a short summary in your own words, and pulls out every "I need to…" as a task you can check off or send to Reminders. You ramble; the page comes out clean.
A free brain dump template (steal this)
Talking or writing, the same four prompts empty a head fast. Say each one, then keep going until the well runs dry:
- What's bugging me right now? — the loudest three things first.
- What am I supposed to be doing? — every open task, big or trivial.
- What am I avoiding? — the awkward one. Say it anyway.
- What would make tomorrow lighter? — ends the dump pointing forward.
Two minutes out loud covers all four. In Outloud, the answers come back as one note: gist up top, your to-dos as a checklist underneath.
Brain dumps and ADHD
For ADHD brains the blank page is the enemy: formatting decisions, perfect-sentence pressure, and the thought evaporating mid-type. Voice removes all three — there's nothing to format and nothing to lose; the thought goes out at the speed it arrives. Speak in any language, switch mid-sentence, circle back, contradict yourself. The structure is the app's job, not yours.
