How to transcribe an audio recording to text on iPhone
There are three honest ways to turn a recording into text, and the right one depends on what you want back: a raw dump, live dictation, or a clean note you can actually use. Here's each, with its real tradeoffs.
Method 1 — Voice Memos' built-in transcript (free, raw)
If you just need the words, iOS has you covered: open Voice Memos, tap a recording, then tap the quote icon — the transcript appears, and you can copy it out. It's free and private.
The tradeoffs: supported languages are limited, the output is one long unformatted block, and mixed-language recordings confuse it. Fine for finding a quote; painful if the recording was 20 minutes of you thinking.
Method 2 — dictate instead of recording (live)
If the goal is text from the start, skip the audio file entirely: the microphone key on the iPhone keyboard types as you speak, into any app. Best for short messages. It falls apart for long-form thinking — pauses end sentences oddly, there's no record you can return to, and one language at a time.
Method 3 — turn recordings into notes, not just text
